Music and The Fictive Dream

 The Sound Of Music

The sound of music is a movie as well as a musical. The story behind the movie is that a girl named Maria takes a job as a governess for a large family due to her not succeeding in being a nun. through this governess job, she falls in love with the children as well as the widowed father who so happens to be in the military and is a captain. The dad of the Von Trapp family is engaged to a person already but slowly starts to fall in love with Maria the governess. Captain Vonn Trap was ordered to be commissioned in the German Navy but he opposes the Nazis. When he finds this out he comes up with a plan to flee away from Austria with Maria and his kids. The Von Trapp family. The family fled the country because Nazie and Hitler were invading and trying to find certain people and families and they happened to be one of the families they were looking for.

This musical shows us the hardships of back in the days when Hitler was around and first coming to the countries. I also feel that this musical is to show what it's like to be in a big family and what it's like at first to show up to a new family and feel unwelcomed at first. At the beginning of the movie, Maria doesn't feel welcomed then she gets around to knowing all of the kids and helping them out. Another role this plays is that you don't really know someone when you first fall in love with them and that they could be hiding a lot of secrets from you. I recall in the movie that one of the elder daughters falls in love with one of the Nazis soldiers and she didn't know that until they were after her and her family at the end of the movie where she has to break it up with him and flea the country with her family.

Broadway version of 'The Sound of Music ...

One message that I saw someone right is that this movie is about having the courage and doing what you believe is right and also being true to yourself ( Raisingchildren.net)

This movie was created in 1965 and directed by Robert Wise.

This song in the sound of music is one of my favorites. It is Maria singing as she first arrives at her governess job telling herself that she is confident in herself to be able to do this job and to believe in yourself basically.

I Have Confidence

Another song in this movie is My Favorite Things. In the movie, she sings this song to the children while there is a terrible storm outside to get them thinking happy things. She tells the kids to imagine their favorite things and starts singing about her own favorite things when she is feeling sad.

My Favorite Things

There is a song sung by the love birds in the movie with a forbidden love they found out at the end of the movie. The man being a Nazi tells the younger girl how she is young timid and shy with out knowledge of the world being himself and being able to take care of her. The younger girl agrees with him saying she is younger and will let him take care of her since she claims herself to be naive.

Some background on the Von Trapp family is they were a family of singers and were very popular at performing and then fled to the Americas from Austria.

My personal reaction on the movie was that it was amazing. It showed how strong women can be at going into a new life with more than you thought you could handle. She got thrown at this position and taking care of that many kids but she believed in herself and made it happen. She also happened to fall in love with the kids and treat them as her own and then found herself falling in love with the Father of the kids as well and then they figured everything out together and ran away and made it out safely with the kids. This movie really taught me. how to have confidence in myself with just Maria being confident in herself from the beginning. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves musicals and easy sing-along songs.

  1. Love love love the Sound of Music! I think that both the movie and the music really speak to the times and honestly I never knew the background of the movie until I was older. The standout performances and wonderfully catchy lyrics make it hard to focus on anything else. While the Von Trapp family was a real singing family, I found this article pointing out main differences in the movie and real life. https://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps-html

  2. Sound of Music was a good choice to pick. I like how you broke it down with the Hitler part. I never even considered that portion of the story. It was interesting to see it from another perspective. I do appreciate the two songs that you chose to use for this as well. People lack confidence these days and it's easy to forget to believe in yourself. I thought you broke everything down very well.

  3. The Sound of Music completely slipped my mind when I was thinking about my topic for this blog post. It's a great movie and is still surprisingly good even this many years later. I think the selections of music that you picked are some of the best songs in the movie, but my personal favorite has to be "My Favorite Things". I think that you broke down the movie pretty well, and did a good job summarizing the movie.
